Cosmos 2479, a Russian military satellite, was launched on 30 March 2012 from Baikonur at 05:49 UT by a Proton-K rocket. The craft weighed 700 tonnes. The satellite is a US-KMO missile detection spacecraft, which will be operated as part of the Oko network of early-warning satellites. US-KMO consists of satellites placed into geosynchronous orbit to monitor missile launches via infrared telescopes. Cosmos 2479 will be stationed in geosynchronous orbit 22,300 miles over the equator giving the platform a view of nearly half of Earth. This launch is the 311th and final launch for the Proton-K rocket.
