Electron 2 was launched with Electron 1 by a single launch vehicle in order to perform simultaneous investigations of the external and internal zones of the earth's radiation belt. Electron 2 was shaped like the cupola of a public building and had a diameter of 1.8 m and a height of 2.4 m. The spacecraft was placed into an orbit that enabled it to study the external zone of the radiation belt. It was equipped with magnetometers, solar sensors, a mass spectrometer, and measuring devices for investigations of the chemical composition of cosmic rays and of the energy spectrum of electrons in the radiation belt. A memory device was included so that observations over several orbits could be obtained by USSR telemetry stations when the satellite was within communications range. Good data were returned by the research systems. More details are in 'The Electron Space System,' Cosmic Research, Vol. 2, No. 3, 1964.
